Methods: Twenty demented elderly in K City, Fukui-ken, participated in the rehabilitation program including physical activities related to seasonal and traditional events and some handicraft. The public health nurses, an occupational therapist, a social worker, hospital nurses, social welfare office staffs, and community people joined and managed the programs of 8 months, from June, 1998. The public health nurses evaluated their cognitive functions, activities of daily living (ADD, psycho-social functions, by using 5 scales that were Hasegawa Dementia Scale-Revision, New Clinical Scales for Rating of Mental States and Activities of Daily Living of the Elderly (NM scale and N-ADL), I-ADL, and the Omaha System. Results: Twenty to fifty-five percents of the demented elderly demonstrated improvement in cognition, ADL, I-ADL, and social behavior. 70-80% of them kept the same levels concerning each item of the scales. Strong correlation was observed between change of NM scale and change of N-ADL (r=0.85). Conclusions: The five scales were useful for outcome evaluation of the community rehabilitation program for the demented elderly.
