The purpose of this research is to clarify the direction of the teaching improvement of the algebraic expression, based on the viewpoint that \"Mathematics is the science of patterns\". In order to achieve this purpose, I constituted the unit of the algebraic expression of the 2nd grade of a junior high school. Especially, in the activity where the students explain that “An odd number and an odd number makes an even number.”, I considered lesson deployment which focused on the mechanism of the odd number. After the analysis of the class, it was suggested that even if the teacher did not show the method represented by the algebraic expression or the method to explain it, the students could express the mechanism of the odd number by the algebraic expression, and could explain that “An odd number and an odd number makes an even number.” using the algebraic expression without help of the teacher.
